Building a play set in your own backyard has many benefits to your child’s physical and emotional stability. Not only that, but, having your very own play set can benefit the parent’s sanity as well, to that, I can attest.
1. Parental Benefits of a Play Set in Your Backyard
Look at it this way, having a play set simply makes life easier and better for everyone. It’s all the benefits of going to a “family entertainment center” (socializing and entertainment) and none of the disadvantages (a bunch of screaming kids and bad pizza).
I think it’s pretty clear why children would love to have a play set of their own. But let’s consider the benefit to the parent as well.
Having a play set means you don’t have to go to the park as often. That sounds like heaven to me. I’ll admit it, it’s my dirty little secret. I can’t stand going to the park. It also will save on gas.
There’s very little that’s more boring than sitting around on a bench watching your child play. Even worse, when they want you to play with them. Okay, okay, it’s not the worst thing in the world, but let’s face it, I’d much rather be at my own house while the kids scramble around on the swings and slide.
2. Parents Get More Work Done
At my own house I can do yard work nearby. I can cook dinner while the kids play. I can even dork around online while the kiddo is outside playing. At the park I’m either running around pretending to be some mysterious character or sitting on the bench trying to avoid my phone and reading useless emails. The only time the park sounds like fun is if we are meeting friends and I’ll have someone to chat with, which leads me to my next point.
3. Social Benefits of Having a Play Set
Having a play set offers the opportunity for more social time between parents and kids.
If your backyard contains a playset, you can invite friends over, having time to chat it up with the parents of your children’s friends.
The kids get to play. The parents get to play. It’s a win win for everyone.
4. Play Set Increases Community
One of the parts of American life is that we aren’t as social with our neighbors in many communities as we used to be. In previous generations, families spent time with their neighbors out of necessity. During pioneer times knowing your neighbors could save your life. These days, we don’t have any real reason to spend time with the people who live near us. But community is important.
People like to feel like they have a reason to invite neighbors over. Having a play set can let your kids get to know the neighbor kids more easily. It increases community and shores up your neighborhood as a safer place. Knowing the families in your neighborhood increases the likelihood that predators will keep at bay. People who know each other can take care of their neighbors during times of illness or emergency. Having a play set is a great way to get to know your neighbors.
5. Improve Health
Having a play set outside in their backyard increases the opportunities for children to play outside, thus increasing the health of your child.
Children need daily outside play. Having a play set in the backyard increases the chances that your child will play outside more often at home.
